To The Members Of The Korean and Foreign Press,

Over the past two years, we have received many press inquiries from all over the world. We are thankful for your interest in our organization and our story. We apologize for not having responded thus far.

As scrutiny and interest in our work increase, we would like to share an important request to members of the press. As you engage in the effort to understand our organization better, many of you will use your access to resources, relationships or technological abilities - or even the understandings and advantages of movement that may be taken for granted when living in a free society - that the regime in Pyongyang does not have similar access to. We respectfully ask that if you learn the identities of our members and leadership, that you help keep them confidential until we ourselves are prepared to have them known.

As you, more than most others will understand, the Pyongyang regime does not respect the rights of its people to speak about or challenge its rule. Even beyond its borders, it will use assassinations, terrorism, and even weapons of mass destruction, to destroy any who might oppose or challenge their monopoly on power. We respectfully and sincerely ask that you do not enable or make it easier for the regime’s death squads, who have already committed and continue to commit countless crimes against humanity, to threaten or harm our members and their families.

The identification of even a single member could lead to the identities of others. Several of us have already escaped their attempts on our lives and that of our families. Many of our compatriots and their relatives have not been as fortunate. And any left surviving in concentration camps would surely face execution if the identities of their family members as dissidents were made known.

We have in the past seen some members of the press publicize details about foreigners imprisoned by Pyongyang. This certainly made the release of these captives more difficult and their imprisonment more harsh. The speculation about the location of Kim Han Sol and his family, despite documented and serious threats to their lives, was also concerning in this regard. The regime does not hesitate to conduct assassinations on foreign soil.

Please never forget the kind of ruthless regime we are up against - one that has also imprisoned journalists as political pawns, and allows no independent press at all among its own citizenry. They have no respect for international norms. The struggle we are engaged in with the incumbent regime is not a political race between equals, but that of a small revolutionary group fighting and resisting with our lives on the line, against a totalitarian regime that maintains concentration camps, keeps its people enslaved, and regularly kills its opponents and their families.

We aspire to a positive partnership with the media and the emergence of a new North with a strong free press. We look forward to the day that we can engage with you, to the day when we feel it is safe to do so.

지난 2년 동안 한국 언론과 세계 각국의 언론은 우리에게 많은 질문과 문의를 보내왔습니다. 이 모든 관심에 대해 진심으로 감사드립니다. 그리고 아직 답변을 드리지 못해 죄송합니다.

본 단체에 대한 관심이 높아져 가는 시점에서 중요한 요청을 드리고자 합니다. 언론인들께서는 우리 단체에 대한 정보를 찾고자 자유로운 사회에서는 당연하게 여기는 자원이나 대인 관계, 기술력과 이해, 혹은 이동의 자유에 등을 활용하시겠지만, 이는 북한 정권이 쉽게 접할 수 없는 것입니다. 따라서 혹시라도 우리 단체 구성원의 정체를 파악하게 되더라도 신원에 대한 비밀을 지켜주시기를 간절히 요청합니다.

북한 정권은 정권의 통치에 대한 국민의 표현 또는 도전의 자유를 절대 허용하지 않는다는 사실을 그 누구보다도 더 잘 알고 계실 것입니다. 정권의 독점적 권력을 반대하거나 이에 도전하는 자들은 국경을 넘어서까지 암살과 테러의 대상이 되며, 북한 정권은 대량 살상 무기의 사용도 꺼리지 않습니다. 반인도적 범죄를 이미 저질렀고 계속해서 수없이 저지르고 있는 정권의 암살단들이 본 단체 구성원이나 그들의 가족을 위협하거나 해치지 않도록 도와주실 것을 정중히 부탁드립니다.

한 명 신원이라도 밝혀지면 다른 구성원의 신원이 노출 될 수도 있습니다. 자신과 가족의 생명을 위협받는 구성원들이 있습니다. 동포와 친인척 중에는 정권의 손에 목숨을 잃은 불운한 이들도 많습니다. 수용소에 남아있는 이들은 가족 중 반체제 인사가 있다는 사실이 밝혀지면 사형을 면치 못할 것입니다.

북한에서 구금 된 외국인의 신상에 대한 상세한 정보가 언론에 보도된 적이 많습니다. 이로 인해 억류 당한 자들의 석방이 더욱 어려워졌고 처벌도 가중되었습니다. 김한솔과 그의 가족이 명백히 생명의 위협을 받는 상황에서 그들의 은신처에 대한 난무한 추측 역시 위험했습니다. 북한 정권은 국경 밖에서도 암살을 서슴치 않습니다.

본 단체가 상대하는 정권이 얼마나 무자비한지 절대 잊지 마십시오. 북한 정권은 기자들을 정치적 인질로 잡고 북한 내에서는 독립적인 언론을 허용하지 않으며, 국제 규범을 전혀 존중하지 않습니다. 우리가 북한의 현 정권과 벌이는 싸움은 같은 입지에서 벌이는 정치 싸움이 아닙니다. 소수의 혁명 조직이 목숨을 걸고 대항하는 전체주의적인 그 정권은 수용소를 운영하며 인민을 노예로 부리고 모든 반대 세력과 그 가족을 수시로 살인하는 정권입니다.

언론의 자유가 강력히 보장되는 새 북조선이 올 날을 기대하며 언론과 긍정적인 관계를 구축할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 언론과 안전하게 소통할 수 있는 날이 오기를 기대합니다.
